Route Planning: Choosing the Right Car for the Southern Shore
Before hitting the gas, it’s important to understand the logistics. The distance from Bishkek to the start of the southern shore (Balykchy) is about 180 km. The road through Boom Gorge is excellent—a four-lane highway with good asphalt.
The main question we get is: How do I get to Issyk-Kul and which shore should I start with?
If your goal is the canyons, go via Balykchy directly to the south.
Vehicle Choice: Crossover or Sedan?
The southern shore offers mixed road quality. The main highway is decent, but access roads to attractions are usually dirt, gravel, and sand.

Skazka Canyon: How to Get There and Road Conditions
Located near the village of Tosor, about 4 km from the main road, Skazka Canyon features red clay and sandstone formations shaped like castles and animals.
Access and Road Conditions
You won’t miss the turn—there’s a “Canyon Skazka” sign. After that, it’s a dirt road. In dry weather, any car can pass. After rain, the clay becomes slippery, and front-wheel drive may struggle.

Parking and Navigation

Mars Canyon (Ak-Sai): Why You Need a Crossover
If Skazka is popular, Mars Canyon is for experienced travelers. It lies farther along the southern shore, past Kaji-Sai.
Why “Mars”?
The landscape here is deep burgundy, massive, and silent. It’s perfect for meditation and photography.
Road Conditions
This is where an SUV really matters. The turnoff is less obvious, and the road is rocky and corrugated. With low clearance, you’ll park far away and walk several kilometers. With a Toyota Land Cruiser from us, you can drive right in.
