Jeep Wrangler in Kyrgyzstan: Mountain Driving With the Top Down
Every other vehicle on this page is a sensible choice. The Jeep Wrangler is a sensible choice that also happens to be exciting.
Take the roof off. Drive through the Boom Gorge toward Issyk-Kul with the wind dropping straight off the Tien Shan snowfields. That is not something a Land Cruiser cabin can replicate, no matter how comfortable the seats are.
Where the Wrangler Excels
The Wrangler’s short wheelbase is its superpower on Kyrgyzstan’s tighter tracks. It turns through switchbacks that make longer SUVs multi-point. The solid axles and genuine low-range 4WD system handle Ala-Archa beyond the park gate, the gravel approaches on the south shore of Issyk-Kul, and the winding tracks through the Chon-Kemin valley (~150 km from Bishkek).

Driving tip: the Wrangler’s 2.0L turbo engine is smaller than the V8s in the Toyota fleet, but the turbocharger maintains boost at altitude better than a naturally aspirated engine of the same size. On the Too-Ashuu switchbacks, it pulls more confidently than you might expect.
Where It Doesn’t Fit
Two people on a weekend trip? Perfect. Four people with camping gear for two weeks? The limited cargo space becomes a real problem. If your trip involves more than two travelers and serious luggage, a Sequoia or Land Cruiser is the practical choice. The Wrangler is for trips where the drive itself is the point.

→ Alternative choice: For multi-week overlanding with cargo, see the Toyota Land Cruiser or Sequoia. For fuel-efficient mountain touring, the SsangYong Rexton.
