Why you need a 4x4 in Kyrgyzstan

90% of Kyrgyzstan is mountains. Asphalt ends 50–100 km outside Bishkek: the road to Song-Kul crosses the 3,446 m Kalmak-Ashuu pass on gravel, Kel-Suu and Tash Rabat are dirt tracks with river crossings, Altyn-Arashan is a rocky 4x4-only road. A sedan will get you to Issyk-Kul; everything beyond it needs ground clearance and four-wheel drive.

Rental terms for 4x4

• Driver 21–65 years old, 3+ years of experience, passport and driving licence.
• Minimum 24 hours; deposit $500, refunded at return.
• OSAGO (third-party liability) included; CASCO for an extra fee — recommended for gravel routes.
• Pickup at Manas Airport (airport rental) or at our office in Bishkek; drop-off in Karakol, Osh and other cities by arrangement.
• Every car has a spare wheel, jack, tow rope and first-aid kit.

Where our 4x4s go

• Song-Kul — 3,016 m lake via Kalmak-Ashuu or the «33 turns» pass, June–September.
• Issyk-Kul loop — 3–7 days: Fairy Tale canyon, Jeti-Oguz, Barskoon, Altyn-Arashan (4x4 only).
• Kel-Suu — border permit required (see below).
• Tash Rabat and Naryn — Silk Road caravanserai at 3,200 m.
• Sary-Chelek, Arslanbob — the south; 2 days each way from Bishkek.
• Two weeks around Kyrgyzstan — 1,000 km loop.

Border zone permits

Areas within ~50 km of the Chinese, Tajik and Kazakh borders (Kel-Suu, Chatyr-Kul, Enilchek and Khan-Tengri, Lenin Peak base camp, Sary-Jaz, Chong-Kemin upper valley) require a border permit issued by the State Border Service. Main roads, Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul and Tash Rabat do not. Processing takes 10–14 working days, so apply before you fly. Details: Rental Terms — border permits and restricted roads.
